Did you know
that a person can die from pressure sores?
That is one item that was taught during our week long wheelchair fitting
trainings that were held this week.
Physical therapists Steve Spencer and Dell Felix were in the Dominican
Republic teaching the importance of properly fitting a wheelchair. Ten persons took the review course, and 32
persons took the complete 3-day course.
There were also 31 new chairs fitted to recipients. Here are some pictures from the event.

Wheelchairs were used as the seating for the class to give the
uncomfortable feel of a poor fitting chair.

Elder and Sister Haws, another nice post. Did you all go see Mercedes? She was one of the interviewees last year when the Spencers came. She is 6'2" and needed a bigger wheelchair. The Spencers said they were going to find her a new one. She is a wonderful young woman who caught a stray bullet at age 17 and has been in a wheelchair ever since. She was going to play pro basketball and volleyball, but her life was drastically altered by that stray bullet.
ReplyDeleteWow. Thanks for reminding us about Mercedes. We need to find her information.
DeleteEdith, Mercedes worked at a orgnization that helps women find jobs. She received her chair from CONADIS and Rosa took us there to see her last year. Her chair was making her legs just ache all the time because it did not fit her correctly. Thank you for all that you are doing.
